Lernout & Hauspie, a speech recognition and translations software company based in Ieper, Belgium and Burlington, Mass., beat analysts expectations, earning 19 cents (21 European cents) a share in the first-quarter but the report revealed weaknesses. Customers owe a lot more than the actual revenue coming into the company.

Lernout and Hauspie Speech Products N.V. said it expects to restate its financial statements for 1998, 1999, and the first half of 2000, to make up for accounting "errors and irrregularities" made in the past. The announcement caused both the Nasdaq and Easdaq stock exchanges to suspend trading indefinitely in the company's shares.
